The best newborn apps? Reader Q&A

total baby appSomeone recommended I purchase the "Total Baby" app and it doesn't look like it's available anymore in in iTunes. Any similar apps you know of and could recommend for parents of newborns? -Kelly

Hi Kelly! When we checked, the Total Baby app is still available on iTunes, so perhaps there was a glitch or a server update when you went to buy it. Anyway, whoever recommended the app to you is one smart mama.

Total Baby is a fantastic and very comprehensive app that lets you track everything you want to know when you're in the throes of newborn-dom; 14 trackers to be specific, including diapers, nursing, pumping, bottles, solids, sleeping and more. There is also a section for adding notes, milestones, doctor visits and growth progression to see how quickly that little peanut is growing. (iTunes, $4.99)

Here are two other good newborn apps to take a look at as well:

If you don't need 14 trackers for your little one and instead want to just focus on nursing, check out this simple, nursing-specific app for everything you'll need for your baby's feeding schedule. Made by the same company as Total Baby, you can expect the same clean interface and ease-of-use. There's a handy stopwatch style timer too that can log the feedings. And it sure beats using the hair elastic on the nursing side wrist that I used with my little ones. (iTunes, $4.99)

Best apps for new parents: iBabyLog app

Maybe you'd rather save that $4.99 and instead put it towards your next box of diapers. In that case, the free iBabyLog is a good tracking alternative. While the design is more cluttered and less appealing than Total Baby, iBabyLog has 18 trackers for baby and offers a cool graphing feature that lets you look at patterns in your baby's sleep patterns. It's free, so don't be surprised that there are ads on screen. Just try to avoid tapping them in your sleep-deprived state. (iTunes, Free) -Jeana

Baby Connect is our favorite. We've used it with two kids so far and it's great!

I used the Total Baby app with my son (who's 2.5 years old now) and loved it. I actually still use it to track dr appts, growth, and immunizations. Well worth the $5!

every time I hear about an app that I would actually PAY for? it's for the iPhone... of which I still do not have. *sadface*

There is also a "feed baby" app that does the same thing! It even reminds you every two hours when your baby should be feed, keeps track of what side and how long, diaper changes, naps, jar food, bottle feeds, pumpings and everything its awesome and I use it everyday on my android for free:-)

I highly recommend iBabyLog. It's free and let's you do so much, no other app compares. The design is not as appealing but it is very user friendly. It's the best app for logging baby's every activity. You can log everything you want and arrange them in the order of the items you use the most. It even provides you graphs of baby's activities and counts of wet vs dirty diapers, duration of baby's sleep by day/week/months, time in b/w feeds, etc... a bunch of analytical tools to help me train my baby on a schedule that works with her natural habits. I have been using this for 5+ months. And it's all FREE. I tried out a few other apps and the free versions were so limited in what I could track. I was really happy to find this app and have used it ever since. They just need to work on a better looking design. sometimes I click on ads just to support them b/c i love the app.

hi, is there any cool apps for windows phone? everything you show here is cool but not everyone has an Iphone....
