Passport pictures from the comfort of home. Thank you Passportica!

Take passport photos at home with PassporticaGetting passport photos taken is arguably one of the least fun aspects of trip preparation (besides actually waiting on line for the passport). The last time I had to get passport pictures taken, I unfortunately chose an extraordinarily busy time at the local drugstore chain, and had to endure getting my photo taken at the front of the store, while everybody in line for the cashier (and for flu shots, mind you) sat and watched.

And of course, as the technician was about to start shooting, she realized that her memory card was full. Thank goodness my kids weren't there with me.

While I won't need to update my passport pictures for another 10 years or so, for the rest of you there's a great new service called Passportica. This handy website prints out passport photos that you take yourself - in the comfort of your own home.

What an amazing idea for busy parents--or for kids in need of photos who might not get it right on the first try.

The site provides instructions on just what to do, then you simply upload them to the site for passport formatting. For just $9.99, you'll have your passport photos printed and delivered in a matter of days. And better, if you hate your pic, you can take it as many times as you like until you get it right. After all, you're the photographer. -Jeana

Last summer we renewed our passports and took photos using an app called Passport Photos. I printed them at home and they were more than acceptable for our passports and it was FREE! You could also send them up to your local Target or other 1 hour printing place for a fraction of the cost of having them taken. This is an Android app, but I am sure there is also one for iPhone as well.
